When chip inventories rise without a recovery in demand

The same semiconductor can appear as finished goods at a chipmaker, stock at a distributor or a component waiting for assembly. Each observation answers a different question.

Locate the inventory in the chain

The OECD maps semiconductor production across specialised stages and regions. That structure complicates a common claim: that rising chip shipments signify stronger final demand. Units moving from a producer to a distributor have been shipped, but they may still be waiting for an equipment maker. A memory component and an automotive controller are also not interchangeable. Define the product, end use and inventory owner before drawing conclusions from a global average.

Count units leaving the channel

Suppose a distributor opens a quarter with 100,000 units, buys 80,000 and supplies 60,000 to customers. It ends with 120,000 units. At the observed sell-through of 20,000 units a month, that covers six months, versus five months at the opening level using the same sales rate. Increased producer shipments can therefore coincide with inventory accumulation downstream. If prices fall, inventories measured in currency can move by much less than physical quantities, so an apparently stable balance is not decisive. Conversely, a shift to higher-priced stock can increase inventory value even if fewer chips are physically available.

Look for the first credible turn

A shorter delivery quote may indicate improved supply, cancellations or a change of product mix. Compare the signal with end-customer shipments, utilisation at the relevant production stage and any disclosure of stock write-downs. A completed chip designed for an old specification cannot automatically serve a growing new market. For a recovery thesis to hold, rising production should ultimately be accompanied by customer consumption and normalising stock coverage in the same segment, not merely expansion in an unrelated chip category.

Practical check

Track one product family through producer shipments, distributor sell-through and weeks of inventory; record explicitly where the observations stop.
